The Best of Both Worlds

I AM YOU! That was the clarion call that went out today as Members of the Women’s Council of REALTORS® (WCR) got together for their annual meeting. It was a recognition that we are all in this thing together; success being defined as both personal and professional—individual and corporate.

During this year’s WCR Annual Meeting, a new strategic envisioning plan is being unveiled. The council recognized that the changes that are impacting our profession are significant, and as a result will necessitate a different type of individual, both in training and professional orientation.

This strategic framework is designed to be implemented over a period of three years. While preserving core values which have served the Women’s Council of REALTORS® well for decades, it recognizes that a different kind of framework for education and deep networking will be required to facilitate an organization that not only recognizes and empowers women, but one that advances women into key leadership positions. Today, the REALTOR® population is 55% female, but this is not necessarily reflected in many areas of local, state, and national leadership roles.

As the meeting starts, the sense of community and welcome is palpable. Although there is a lot of campaigning for key national positions, the focus is positive. Sitting next to my State Chapter leadership and members, it presents an opportunity to touch base with one of my State Governors, Robbin Barnes. Robbin is one of the friendliest individuals I have ever met. Her face lights up as she talks about crisscrossing the state to encourage and meet members. But it was not always the case.

At one point, Robbin admits she was shy and reserved. But through involvement with the Women’s Council of REALTORS® and her local BNI group, she has matured and blossomed into a seasoned professional. It strikes me as she speaks that her journey was greatly aided by her involvement with a supportive group embracing her.

That’s the beauty of the councils which are a part of the larger REALTOR® family. Attending both NAR activities and WCR activities during this conference provides a unique window to observe the dynamics of a larger group and the nuances of the smaller more intimate environment provided by being a part of a smaller council. The REALTOR® experiences provide an extensive menu of options covering every imaginable aspect of the real estate industry, but ultimately it’s important to find a place where you can flock with minnows and make yourself a home.
